After a tough loss to Carlmont High in overtime on Dec. 6, the Urban boys varsity basketball team rebounded with two decisive victories to finish the Cardinal Classic with a 2-1 record and win the Classic’s consolation bracket.
In their Thursday game against Carlmont, the Blues came back from an 18-point deficit at the half, and co-captain Harry Krinsky (’13) forced the game into overtime with a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Down by one with 15 seconds left, the Blues turned over the ball on a pass to Nate Cohen (’13), resulting in a Carlmont layup and pushing Carlmont’s lead to three. The final score was 56-53.
Despite the rough loss, the Blues finished the tournament with strong wins over the Bay Breakers on Friday, Dec. 7 and the Balboa Buccaneers the following day. Both wins were decisive, with a 71-37 lead over the Breakers and 58-37 over the Buccaneers. Cohen’s strong performance and high scoring earned him a spot on the all-tournament team.
Despite the Blues’ overall strong showing, Krinsky wasn’t satisfied with his team’s performance. “It was disappointing,” Krinsky said. “The first game we should have won and then we just coasted through the rest of it … it was a loss we needed to have. It’s good that it happened early in the season.”
